In higher-ed, there is a widely-held myth that the smartest person in the room should lead. We take for granted that someone who is smart can lead, and when we don't take steps to prepare or develop our people for leadership positions, leaders are more likely to derail.

This is a problem, because college and university leaders at all levels increasingly face complex challenges without easy solutions. They are navigating unknown territory.

When we lead in the absence of a map, often we rely too heavily on what we already know or think we know well. We fall back on tradition, losing sight of the creativity and the risks we need to take now. We rely more heavily on "smartship" than leadership. We are especially prone to this tendency in higher education because of the unique weight we assign to hierarchy and tradition.

This tendency leads to four destructive dynamics, and Pat Sanaghan's new book explores these four in depth and offers specific strategies for countering them. These four include:

Derailment of the leader - wherein leaders are often promoted on the basis of academic prowess or past achievement but lack the management training, development, and support needed to succeed.

Seduction of the leader - wherein leaders incorrectly believe they are receiving accurate intel about what is happening within their division.

Arrogance - wherein we over-emphasize and reward individual achievement rather than encourage leaders to seek broad input and approach complex issues as a team endeavor.

Micromanagement - wherein the risk averse culture of higher ed fosters leadership patterns that emphasize control and predictability rather than the risk taking, courage, and empowerment of one’s people that leadership in today’s higher education requires.

EARLY REVIEWS FOR THE BOOK:

"Pat Sanaghan has done an excellent job of identifying the unique characteristics of executive positions in higher education and offering a learning agenda that will assure success for university and college leaders. This book should be required reading for any president, and deserves a place on every leader's desk in higher education." - Bob Kustra, President Emeritus, Boise State University

"Noting that the academy usually fails to select and prepare leaders with the right traits and experiences, Sanaghan's book is masterful at not only helping leaders prevent derailment and failure, but also at helping new and experienced leaders succeed. This is a wonderful keep-by-your-side manual for higher-ed leaders." - Rebecca Chopp, Chancellor, University of Denver

In this book Sanaghan reveals, explores, and provides remedy for the four “deadly sins” that derail higher education (and other) leaders who are otherwise brilliant, decisive, and hard working. These “high crimes and misdemeanors” are “the impeachable offenses” of: leader abrasiveness, leader isolation (by discouraging information and feedback), the mania for control via micro-management, and arrogance.

If you suspect that you are a leader that other people find difficult to work with; if you are coaching a difficult leader; if you work for a difficult leader you need this book. While the book is specifically for leaders in higher education, it is a worthwhile read for anyone in industry, government, health care, or non-profits. It’s that valuable and that readable. It can be absorbed on a Raleigh to Dallas plane ride, but then you want to have it on your desk so you can refer to it daily.

There are number of other elements that make this book particularly valuable. These include spot-on descriptions of difficult leaders, checklists that allow you assess a given situation, and detailed advice about how to address the situation. Situations include: where you are you are the problem boss, where you have a problem boss, and how you might proceed if you supervise a problem boss.

There are multiple one page case studies built from Sanaghan’s direct experience that are absolutely honest about how tough it is for some leaders to make the positive changes that can save their careers, but, at the same time, he offers hope and he describes approaches that have worked with hard cases.

The “bonus” chapter on supervision at the end is a godsend. It should be given to every manager at every university. That alone would transform organizations.
Sanaghan, who has had a brilliant career as a consultant, trainer, author, and coach uses the term “Survival Guide” in the title of this latest book. I actually think this book will save some careers and perhaps some lives as well.

"In over a decade of presidential leadership, I have found few resources that are as practical, relevant and timely as Dr. Sanaghan's survival guide for higher education leaders. Also, few consultants and advisors understand the current higher education leadership landscape as well at Dr. Sanaghan. He has devoted over 30 years to developing and strengthening leadership in colleges and universities around the country. This book accurately and insightfully captures key issues facing leaders at every level of the institution, including presidents. Pressures are mounting. Presidential tenures are shortening. Fewer leaders are aspiring to institutional leadership. This book paves the way for current and aspiring leaders to make sense of and traverse the important and difficult work of leading in our colleges, universities and systems. I strongly encourage and recommend this book to leaders serious about their impact and effectiveness." - Steven Titus, President, Iowa Wesleyan University

There are many reasons and ways in which a leader can derail. Pat Sanaghan’s book is an intelligent and insightful look into how a university can support, encourage and retain the bright leaders that will lead them into the future. Sanaghan’s book is required reading for, not only presidents, but board members as well in order for them to fully embrace and support the initiatives and processes to lead their university forward. The practical strategies that he suggests are powerful and can help a leader avoid derailing.

This is the book to give to friends, colleagues, (and yourself) when taking on new leadership roles or confronting unanticipated challenges. It provides practical, sensible and actionable advice, all intended to help leaders accomplish organizational mission and goals in collaborative ways (and should be available in plain cover – so it can be pulled out for timely guidance during board meetings, crises, or conferences with resistant subordinates).
